The works will pave the way for main contractor Multiplex to start work on the 2.5-acre site to create a ‘commercially led’ mixed-use development.
Designed by Make Architects, the major project will involve a 25-storey office tower connected to two buildings of 14 and 6 storeys.
The design also features external terraces and balconies overlooking the Thames, and a new public rooftop restaurant and terrace, as well as transforming 40 per cent of the site into public.
The scheme known as 72 Upper Ground will be all-electric, fossil fuel-free, while targeting net zero carbon in operation along with BREEAM ‘Outstanding’.
Multiplex will also construct green spaces to boost biodiversity and reduce CO2 levels.
Callum Tuckett, UK Managing Director at Multiplex, said: “We are very proud to be involved with such an exciting mixed-use development, which will transform this part of the South Bank.
“We have a highly experienced and talented project team on site and are looking forward to delivering a high-quality scheme that matches the ambitions of all project partners and stakeholders.”
Shinichi Kagitomi, chief executive of developer Mitsubishi Estate London, said: “Starting on site marks a major milestone for this landmark development, which will make a significant positive contribution to the South Bank.”
The project is due to complete in 2029.
